Corey & Gypsy PDF  | Print |  Email

GypsyGypsy is doing great.  She loves Kingston and there are many dog-friendly people in the neighbourhood.  She has made many secret friends who bring her treats when I put her out in the back yard.

I also wanted to tell you that Gypsy now has a special place in many people's hearts in Nova Scotia.  In February, my mother lost her battle with breast cancer.  For a week leading up to her death, my mother was at home in a hospital bed in the living room, surrounded by her family (which is huge).

The day my mother was brought home, I drove to Nova Scotia with Gypsy to be with her, and the manner in which Gypsy acted was uncanny.  As soon as Gypsy entered the house and sensed that things weren't right, she went to my mother’s hospital bed and curled up underneath it.  She stayed under that bed day and night until my mother passed away, leaving only her side only to go outside and relieve herself or to get a drink of water (she didn't eat the whole time). Also, sometimes Gypsy would emerge to "make her rounds" and visit everybody who was sitting in chairs around my mother.  Her visits gave family members the opportunity to pat her and to think of happy thoughts, if only for a few seconds.  Occasionally, I would place Gypsy on the bed beside my mother and my mother would pat her head for a few minutes.

You should know that one of the animals you rescued provided unconditional comfort and companionship to a dying women and her family, and that she has earned a special place in the hearts of many people.  The priest who was present at the time of my mother's death remarked that Gypsy was the best grief counselor anyone could have asked for.

Thank you,

Corey

Franken & Mazel PDF  | Print |  Email

mazel_and_frankenWe just love our guys Franken and Mazel! They are best buddies whom we treasure very much.

We are foster parents for D'Arcy's ARC, and Mazel (Hebrew word for "lucky") was our very first foster "guest".  He came to us as an eight week old kitten in need of lots of TLC and medicine, as he had injuries from being shot through the head by a BB gun. As we nursed him back to health, he touched our hearts so much that we immediately adopted him and he never left our home, quickly becoming King of the Castle too!

A few years later we met Franken, the ARC's TV star, at the Shelter and knew we would be the "purrfect" parents for him. He is our special Angel who reminds us daily how valuable all life is. Although he has 3 ears, he is almost totally deaf, so depends upon us and his buddy Mazel to guide him. He also has vertigo and a crooked jaw with misaligned teeth, but always greets us with a "chirp" and a nose kiss.  D'Arcy's ARC saw through all of his challenges, right to his big loving heart and gave him a second chance at life.

We will be forever grateful to the wonderful, caring staff at the ARC for saving Franken and Mazel and bringing them into our lives.  Paws up for D'Arcy's ARC!!

Boomer PDF  | Print |  Email

boomerI have a few ARC cats and the latest addition has a little story. When the ARC got brand new stainless steel kennels for the isolation room, we went to the Winnipeg Humane Society and rescued some cats from there to fill up our isolation ward.

One of the cats was named Bluto, he really melted my heart. He was a stray brought into the WHS but someone must have owned this big boy at some time. He was already neutered but had no identification, so no one came to claim him.

When he arrived at WHS he was badly matted and he had to be shaved. When he arrived at the ARC he had some respiratory difficulty and his fur was barely growing back - he would not eat.

Bluto seemed very down, sooooo, I thought I would take him home to see if I could get him to eat. Well, the day he came to our house, he walked out of the carrier and into his new home! He had no problem with our other cats or our dog. He soon got into the routine of eating with the rest of the bunch. Needless to say he did not go back to the ARC and has fit into our home very well. He likes to beg for food and given the chance will take it right off your plate. He also likes to lick your face at 4am but we LOVE him.

We renamed him Boomer and he seems to like it. His favourite spot is in front of the register with his head resting on the water bowl. I find it so hard to believe that someone could throw out this awesome guy. He has no desire to go outside and is very content to sit by the window and watch the squirrels.

Samantha PDF  | Print |  Email

samanthaThis is Samantha, her mom was found abandoned in the walls of a house somewhere in Winnipeg, pregnant. Her mom ended up at D'arcys A.R.C. where she gave birth to Samantha. She came to me when she was just 7 weeks old in 2001. She has grown into a big beautiful girl and loves to spend her time sitting in the window watching the birds and people go by. Her favorite past time however is curling up on my lap, or in my bed (especially if I'm in it) to snooze the day away. She is the light of my life. Being Siamese however, she doesn't always get along with the other two cats in my house but she is tries really hard to tolerate them. She is definitely mommy's girl.

Tsuki Tsu & Stormy Weathers PDF  | Print |  Email

Stormy Weathers

tsuki_stormy

This is Stormy Weathers (AKA Storm Trooper). She was adopted from D'Arcy's ARC on June 10, 2006.

My husband and I were told that she was brought in by the City of Winnipeg Police, so I thought that naming her Stormy Weathers was fitting (1. for her colour; and 2. for Cybill Shepherd’s character in Moonlighting).

She is a real “talker,” and has been since day one!  When we noticed her in the kennel, she stood up on her hind legs, with her front feet up and just “talked” while she patted the kennel.  I was struck by her beautiful eyes, grey coat, “soft talking” and LOUD purring.  When we took her out, she snuggled right into my husband’s arms, and purred as LOUD as she could.  I knew right then and there I had to take her home.

I’ve never quite had a cat like her. She loves to hop onto shoulders to perch and purr.  With some cooperation from the human, she can step across to the OTHER shoulder while in “mid-ride” for a different view.

From day one, she has gotten along well with the other animals in the house. The first week, she used the dog (Tsuki) as a mattress.  She is truly a wonderful addition to our household.

Tsuki Tsunami

tsuki_stormy

This is Tsuki Tsunami (formerly known as “Nonna”). She was adopted on January 9, 2004 from D'Arcy's ARC.

My heart melted when she came barreling towards me when she was let out of her kennel.  It seemed as if she launched herself at me as if to say “take me home, please!!!” Even as a small puppy, she was a sweet, loving, good-natured, energetic dog. Her first name means “beloved,” because she is a beloved member of our household. She doesn’t seem to care where she is, as long as she’s with her humans. She loves to join us when we are cross-country skiing in the winter, and rollerblading in the summer, although her favourite time of year seems to be winter.

She gets along really well with the cats in the household, and even cuddles up with one of them (Stormy).

She is a wonderful addition to our home.
