Cats have the reputation of being independent creatures who need little from their owners.  While it’s true that cats are a relatively “low maintenance” pet, they do have needs that must be met.  Each cat has a distinct personality and depending upon age, breed and temperament, a set of behaviours that may or may not suit your home.

Some cats are mellow from the day they’re born.  Others are terrors who love to run, jump and climb.  Some cats are aloof while others are “talkative” and highly interactive.   When you’re ready to adopt a cat, it’s a good idea to have in mind what kind of companion you want.  If your idea of quality time is napping or quietly watching TV with the cat snuggled on your lap, look for a cat that shares these values.  If you want to play with your cat and be amused by its antics, then look for a feline with an energetic and curious nature.

And just as important, consider the other inhabitants of your house.  Very small kittens are too fragile for many young children.  Timid cats do best in a quiet household.  Robust, confident cats or cats that have previously lived with dogs will do best sharing a home with your canine family.  Quieter cats are more trustworthy companions for the elderly.

Most cats that enter the shelter are categorized loosely as Domestic Shorthairs.  This means they are of no particular breed.  Therefore, the best way to learn about the personality of a shelter cat is to ask a shelter worker about their experience with the animal and to spend some time observing and interacting with the animal.  When you’re ready to adopt, please come to the shelter and tell us about your interests and your household.  We know our resident animals very well and can help you chose a cat companion that you’ll treasure for life.
