Hello D'Arcy's Arc volunteers and all fellow animal lovers. I just wanted to update my dog Snuggles page on the D'Arcy's Arc Alumni list since it has been a few years since the initial posting. Snuggles was adopted from D'Arcy's Arc in May 2001 at the age of approximately 6 months. She is a female Maltese, born deaf with a very friendly and curious personality. Upon learning that she was deaf, we were a bit concerned as to what challenges may lay ahead regarding her training, personality and temperment. With a stable daily routine and a few 5-10 minute daily training sessions, her transition to her new home was very smooth. She was able to learn sign language and in just a few weeks learned the commands "sit," "stay," "lie down," "come," "shake a paw," "jump on the couch," "let's go for a walk," "time to eat," "good girl" and "bedtime." Her housebreaking period for going to the bathroom outside in the yard took almost no time at all. I still can't believe how easily trained she was. Although petite and cuddly looking, she is a strong energetic little dog who loves her daily walks and lots of playtime. |

Hunter is a two and a half year old labrador retriever cross. In this photo he is sitting on the verandah in our cottage in Northwestern Ontario. He loves walking through the woods twice a day and playing fetch in the lake. We met Hunter on February 13, 2007 in Susan's (a D'Arcy's ARC foster parent) basement where he was snuggled up with the six remaining puppies in his litter. The mother, a yellow lab, abandoned them. We would love to see photos of his siblings. If anyone knows where the seven other puppies (one female yellow lab, six male black labs born on December 20, 2006) ended up please contact the ARC so we may get in touch. Hunter has been a joy and we can't believe he's only been in our lives for two and a half years years. - Jennifer

Maggie has become a very valued family member and we just love her to bits! She was so easy to train. Her newest trick is to "roll over". She gets so excited when we have a treat for her, she often does her trick without any commands! She loves the water, walks and all of her toys. She loves to play with her friend, Jasper, a Husky X Shepherd who lives close by, and when we ask her "Where's Jasper?" she gets all excited. She's very gentle and loving. She's the biggest "lap dog" we've ever seen! She's not satisfied until she's nudged between her two owners on the couch. Thank you for giving us the opportunity to meet Maggie and make her a part of our family!

February 2006, I was driving down Portage Avenue and passed D'Arcy's ARC. At this point in time, I had never been in but recalled hearing of the ARC. With some time to spare and two kids in tow, we stopped in to see what the ARC was all about. I come from a long line of pet-lovers and have passed that trait onto my children. Two sets of blue eyes stared pleadingly up at me "PLEASE CAN WE GET ANOTHER CAT?" With two senior cats at home I said that it would not be fair to introduce a new family member; our cats were old and set in their ways and who knew what Dad would say. We snuggled some kitties and left empty handed. That night at home, all I could talk about at bedtime was the ARC. My husband listened patiently, especially about a "little black cat who was missing a foot.. you know dear... the perfect ones will get adopted... what about him?" The discussion turned into "2 cats are enough here." |

We adopted Katie (Formerly Uniquewa) from the A.R.C in March 2007. Katie was a very scared 8 month old pup, with a tremendous fear of people. We knew that we would have a lot of work ahead of us when we took her home, but her transformation has been nothing short of amazing. Our first few weeks involved having to carry her outside, encouraging her off the couch and giving her a lot of love. We received much support and encouragement from the staff at the A.R.C. She has transformed into the most affectionate, fun and well behaved girl. We spend a lot of time taking her to off leash parks, play groups and this summer she has experienced camping and canoeing for the first time. Adopting Katie was the best decision we have made. She has really enriched our lives, and the love she gives us everyday makes all of the hard work in the beginning well worth it! - Michael E |
