It has been a year since Fipper suffered severe 2nd and 3rd degree chemical burns to 90% of her face. It was this event that scarred her face, but not her personality. This event also brought her into our lives here at the ARC, where she now resides living a spoiled dog's life. She has adapted well to the busy, fast paced environment of the ARC. Here, she lives like a queen. She has her own bed, poses for the media, has done a documentary on animal abuse, visits schools and is our 'Wal-Mart' greeter, making sure all of the customers get a chance to pat her on the head. She has learned to give cats a wide berth, while at the same time allowed the cats to accept a dog into their living spaces. Each day someone will ask what happened to her face and it gives us great pleasure to be able to show off such a beautiful living creature that has touched our lives in such a profound way. No matter how tough things here get, it is Fipper that gives us the strength to do the things that we do. She is a pleasure to work with. |

When O.J. came to the ARC, he weighed only three pounds. His FIV positive status, assorted scars and frost-damaged ears told a story of a hard life on the streets. Though he wasn't a classic beauty, this Tom had a special quality that won our hearts! With a lot of encouragement from his extended ARC family, O.J. put on weight and settled in as the shelter's house cat and feline mascot. For four years, O.J. enjoyed the cosiest of beds and the privilege of roaming freely in the adoption centre. He had his girlfriend Mocha and other special feline friends. He commanded the affection and attention of staff and volunteers, and gracefully accepted cuddles from his regular visitors. Though O.J. was adored by many, we could never bring ourselves to part with this guy! Sadly, the choice was taken away from us on October 26th when our dear friend passed away in his sleep. He was 18 years old (or so), but we hoped he would go on for ever. We take a lot of pride in the fact that, thanks to the ARC, O.J. knew love and comfort in his life. Still, we miss him terribly. Goodbye, little buddy. We'll see ya later! |
