June 16 - Heavy Headwinds

Active Image- Tuesday, June 16th, 2009 -

Today's Trip:  124km
Total Trip:  1610km

We got away earlier this morning, thanks to Suzi; left around 7AM.  It was cooler to ride, but by 9AM it was already hot.  We were in Gull Lake, SK for about an hour or so, where Suzi and I stopped for a pee break.

There was a tonne of roadkill today, primarily gophers.  We had to dodge them continuously.  In the mean time, Dan and Jenn disassembled the tent and picked up my water and ice then caught up to us around 9:15AM.

Before we knew it, we were in Swift Current.  We stopped and tried to get directions to the nearest Subway for lunch, however we seemed to have gotten lost.  We split up into two teams, looking for the place.  Suzi and I ended up at Extreme Pita, whereas Dan and Jenn actually found Subway.  It was difficult to coordinate in the city as one team had a car, and the other had bikes.  There were too many service roads for everyone to handle.

Active ImageJust shy of Herbert, SK we met up with a man named Ben.  Ben is riding from Vancouver, BC to St. John's, NFLD.  He is aiming to raise $50,000 for a orphanage in Thailand.  He is taking his time, let's say.  Shortly thereafter, there was an alpaca farm.  Jenn took a picture for your enjoyment.

We managed to arrive in Herbert, SK around 3:30PM.  We found the camp ground, which a price had to be negotiated to $20 from $36.  On a lighter note, showers tonight cost 50 cents!  Dan and Jenn pitched the tent quite smoothly.

When we wanted to head out for dinner, for some reason, the car wouldn't start!  We have called Road-Side Service and they have to come out from Swift Current, SK in the morning.  Not too sure what the problem is, though it isn't the battery (we think).

Ben, Suzi and I decided to walk to the restaurant where we ate Chinese food.  After dinner, Ben decided to hop back on his bike and continue down the road to Moose Jaw, SK.  He is not too sure how far he'll get, but apparently we'll wake him up on the way.  Ben claims to be sleeping on the side of the road in a tent.

There is no wireless in this town, so Dan is actually helping me write this blog at the local Library.  I'm leaving now but he'll put the rest up for your enjoyment.  We're all getting tired.  I will try to call Road-Side Service tonight and make arrangements for service, we'll see how things go from there.

There's bound to be a hitch somewhere along this trip, right?  That's all for me tonight.

Good night.
