The Volunteer Commitment

Volunteers are required to commit to at least one year of service, working at least 3 hours per week.  Volunteers are expected to be responsible, courteous and respectful of ARC policies.

Volunteer Shifts

Weekday shifts available:    8:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
                1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.
                6:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m.
Saturday shifts available:    8:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
                2:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Sunday shifts available:    9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
                6:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m.

Volunteer Duties

ARC volunteers focus their energies on providing direct care to the animals and to general shelter upkeep.  Duties Include:

• cleaning kennels and litterboxes
• feeding, grooming and socializing animals
• walking dogs
• transporting animals to veterinary appointments
• facility maintenance (sweeping, mopping, dusting, etc.)
• laundry
• assisting with fundraising events
  

The Volunteer Experience

D'Arcy's A.R.C. has approximately 100 volunteers who provide valuable care to the animals in our shelter.  The ARC has a very small staff and we couldn't possibly rescue the number of homeless, abused and abandoned animals that we do without the help of our volunteers! Our volunteers are hands on people who enjoy handling animals and providing the care they need for future success.  They don't mind getting their hands dirty and pitching in as needed.  They put the care and the comfort of the animals before other concerns. Our volunteers tell us they enjoy working at the ARC.  There is nothing more rewarding than seeing a cat or dog restored to health and confidence, and then adopted to a good home! Our volunteers also accept the fact that once in a while, outcomes are sad.  Sometimes, an animal will succumb to illness or injury.   These occasions are rare, but they are a fact of life in an animal rescue organization. As our volunteers gain experience, they are given increased responsibilities and the opportunity to learn new animal care skills.  When we have a staff position available at the ARC, we like to fill the position from within the ranks of our volunteers.  Many of our volunteers have been with us for the whole time we've been in business -  more than six years!

2. Drop off application to us in person at 730B Century Street.
3. Attend an orientation session.
4. Confirm that volunteering is right for you.
