| Where our cats come from |
|
At D’Arcy’s A.R.C. you’ll find cats of every description within our shelter. We receive our cats from several main sources:
If space allows, we will accept some cats from people who need to surrender their pets. However, our organization’s focus is on rescuing stray and abandoned animals as well as animals at risk of euthanasia. If you wish to bring a cat to the shelter, please phone us first. Although we try to have several kennels available for emergencies, many days we are completely full. Occasionally, we have to deal with outbreaks of contagious diseases in the shelter and cannot safely accept new animals. Feral Cats A feral cat is a cat that has never been touched by humans or socialized to interact with people. These cats are effectively wild animals. D’Arcy’s A.R.C. does not provide rescue, shelter or adoption services for feral cats. It is our experience – as well as the experience of other animal care professionals – that these cats do not adapt to an indoor lifestyle or make safe pets. Very rarely does a feral cat respond to even the most compassionate or patient caregiver. If you have a feral cat or a colony of cats in your neighbourhood, please phone us at 888-2266. We may be able to give you support in trapping, neutering and returning the animal to the outdoors so that it may live the way it’s most comfortable – without contributing to further generations of feral cats or spreading disease. If kittens are trapped at a very young age, they may be socialized in a foster care environment. |
